I get to work with paint, both day and night.

Housepainting has made me extra conscious of people’s home environments, and how they’re affected by the materials and objects that they’re surrounded with. It’s my observation that the people who surround themselves with less mass-produced objects and more objects of personal meaning (family heirlooms, hand-made textiles, and one-of-a-kind artwork) seem to be more satisfied with life.

Housepainting has also given me a deeper understanding of the materials that I work with. As I’ve become more accustomed to working with larger brushes, I’ve started to expand into working on larger pieces. I’ve also started to juxtapose different materials to effect the eye’s perception of a piece of artwork - for instance, pairing an extremely flat textured paint, such as gouache, against a highly-reflective metallic paint. This creates a unique form of flashing on the artwork that is most readily seen with the naked eye. I’ve also grown a deeper understanding of the layering of oil, latex, and the materials they sit on.

Even though I always considered myself to be an artist, I never truly felt as immersed in my materials until I started working with them day in and day out. Today, I truly feel like not just an artist, but a painter.

These days, I’m reading a lot about about Jungian and Buddhist philosophy. Many of my art pieces develop into a visual meditation for myself to work through a concept or lesson that I need internalize in my own life. My hope is that as one of my pieces sits in or “decorates” somebody else’s environment, it will also allow them to meditate on and reconnect with certain aspects of themselves that perhaps have been forgotten or set aside in the rush of their day-to-day life. I hope it will make them pause, ponder, and connect with something hidden deep within.
